What are research grants?
- Research grants are awarded through an open application process by funding organizations, such as research grant foundations.
- Tokyo Tech accepts and treats research grants as donations for education and research.
- Except in cases where charges are not accepted by the funding organization, a standard 15% of the received amount is charged for shared expenses (overhead). The charged amount for shared expenses will be used for university-wide expenses, recipient organization expenses (School or other organization that received the donation), and donation-incurred administrative expenses. (Regulations revised on July 1, 2019)

<Important>
Some foundations prefer to deposit grants in a personal bank account of a faculty member rather than to the Institute's bank account.
However, when a faculty or staff member of the Institute (including non-regular faculty and staff) is awarded a research grant, that individual must transfer the research grant to the Institute.
In the past, investigations by the Board of Audit of Japan revealed cases where faculty members failed to follow procedures and privately managed grants.
As a general rule, research grants must be managed by the Institute in accordance with the Institute regulations.
