Establishing Research Groups

Research Groups

Overview

The Research Group is a unique interdisciplinary concept established at Tokyo Tech to facilitate the formation of international research bases by grouping individual research by full-time faculty into innovative and specific fields beyond the boundaries of departments, and to promote research in a strategically sound manner.
The Research Group is established for the cases that fall under the following:

  • Research that holds seeds or resources satisfying company needs and aims to promote industry-university collaboration;
  • Research that aims to be adopted as large-scale national projects; and
  • Basic and exploratory research to be grouped.

Each Research Group is a three-year program. Since the first was initiated in 2002, a number have been activated. Some have been evolved into Tokyo Tech Research Centers and have obtained external funds based on Research Group activities, which shows that the concept functions as a new core for research at Tokyo Tech.

In 2019, the Innovation Research Initiative was renamed Research Group, the period was reduced from five to three years, and the roles to be played were reviewed.

Establishing a Research Group

1. Obtain approval from the Dean or Director of the relevant department

Establishing a Research Group requires approval from the dean or director of the principle researcher’s department using the Application for Establishment of a Research Initiative(Signed approvals are required.)
Contact the Research Planning Division Research Planning Group (kenkik.plan[at]jim.titech.ac.jp) before submitting the application.

*Note: Please replace [at] with @ when you send an email to us.

2. Apply to the President via the Director of the Office of Research and Innovation

3. Approval/ Rejection is decided by the President after discussions at the Office of Research and Innovation

The proposed group is discussed at a meeting of the Office of Research and Innovation.

Please check here for the details.

Renewal of the Research Group

The period of each Research Group is up to three years. In principle, extensions are not granted; however, exceptions are possible in the following cases:

  • When external funding has been obtained in accordance with the purpose of the group described in the application (however, the maximum period is the expiration of the relevant external funding); and
  • If the Research Group was established for the grouping of basic or exploratory research and the continuing need is approved by the President.

*Application for renewal of Research Groups that have met the above two conditions follows the same flow as the initial application.

Cancellation of the Research Group

In the event the Research Group is canceled before expiration of the period of validity, the principal researcher is required to report to the relevant department director and to notify the President via the Director of the Office of Research and Innovation.
Notification of Cancellation of the Research Initiativemust be submitted to the Research Planning Division, Research Planning Group (kenkik.plan[at]jim.titech.ac.jp).
